Cartonplast Ibérica Reinforces Sustainability Initiatives and Receives Calculo-Reduzco Seal for Carbon Footprint Reduction
November 12, 2024
Emphasizing Recyclability, Recycled Content, and Resource Efficiency in Packaging
Cartonplast Ibérica, a pioneer in the management of reusable transport packaging, is proud to announce it has once again been awarded the 'Calculo-Reduzco' Seal by the Spanish Office for Climate Change (Oficina Española del Cambio Climático - OECC). This recognition, awarded by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge’s (MITECO) Carbon Footprint Registration, Compensation, and CO2 Absorption Projects, highlights Cartonplast’s enduring commitment to the environmental responsibility.
Over the 2019–2023 period, Cartonplast Ibérica achieved an annual reduction of more than 90 tons of CO₂ emissions. This success reflects our proactive approach to measuring and reducing emissions across all operational scopes, including direct emissions (Scope 1), indirect emissions from electricity consumption (Scope 2), and third-party emissions associated with our activities (Scope 3).
Strategic Actions for a Circular and Resource-Efficient Future
Cartonplast's sustainability journey extends beyond carbon footprint reduction to a broader focus on recyclability and responsible resource use. We’ve implemented significant advancements in the materials and processes that power our production of pallets and pads. This year, we have taken concrete steps to improve recyclability across our product range and have increased the percentage of recycled materials used in our products, supporting a closed-loop lifecycle for packaging materials.
Key initiatives from Cartonplast Ibérica’s comprehensive sustainability strategy include:
- Enhanced Recyclability and Recycled Content: Cartonplast has increased the recycled material content in its pallets and pads, reinforcing its dedication to circularity and the sustainable use of resources.
- Water Consumption Reduction with UV Treatment: Cartonplast has implemented UV water treatment systems across its facilities to significantly decrease water consumption. This innovation ensures that we maintain high-quality standards while preserving this vital resource.
- Paper Consumption Reduction through the PaperLess Project: With the launch of the PaperLess project, Cartonplast has taken decisive action to reduce paper usage. This initiative is part of a broader digital transformation strategy aimed at decreasing our reliance on paper-based systems, enhancing efficiency, and reducing our environmental footprint.
Commitment to Renewable Energy and Resource Conservation
Our sustainability strategy also includes investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and transportation improvements:
- Solar Power in Parla and Poolplaca: Photovoltaic panels have been installed at our main facilities, reducing our reliance on non-renewable energy and actively contributing to clean energy production.
- Efficient HVAC Systems and LED Lighting: Our energy optimization includes modern HVAC equipment with low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants and energy-efficient LED lighting in all facilities.
- Sustainable Transportation: Cartonplast’s transition to a fleet using Joanca gas trucks underscores our commitment to minimizing emissions from logistics.
A Message from Our Managing Director
“We are immensely proud of the strides we’ve made, both in reducing our carbon footprint and in enhancing our products’ recyclability,” said José María Carrasco, Managing Director of Cartonplast Ibérica. “This recognition strengthens our resolve to innovate and to lead in sustainable practices, aiming to create a lasting positive impact in our industry and for our partners.”
Ongoing Initiatives and Future Goals
Beyond emission reductions, Cartonplast Ibérica’s Sustainability Awards recognize leaders in green logistics and supply chain practices, with each award cycle contributing to offset efforts, including tree planting initiatives designed to absorb over 50,000 kg of CO₂ over the coming decades.
Cartonplast Ibérica’s 2024 sustainability measures highlight a robust commitment to environmental responsibility and circularity, setting an example in the reusable packaging industry and contributing to a sustainable future.
